Detailed model of bone tissue incl. blood vessels in a microscopic perspective
This model shows bone tissue incl. blood vessels in a microscopic perspective, and gives a three-dimensional insight into the structure of a tubular bone.
The model weighs approximately 0.8 kg and the dimensions are 26 x 19 x 14.5 cm. Compared to the bone tissue in a natural tube bone, the tissue in the model is enlarged 80 times. It is delivered on a white stand (plastic sheet).
Anatomical features
Anatomical features
Anatomically speaking, the model primarily shows the 2 main types of bone tissue (the compact and the spongy bone tissue):
The compact bone tissue is seen in a yellow shade and makes up most of the model. Here, bone matrix is seen in the form of lamellae with embedded bone cells (osteocytes). Furthermore, blood vessels and the special organization of the lamellae can be seen in Haversian systems (cortical osteons). The periosteum surrounding the bone is also seen
The cancellous bone tissue is only seen to a small extent at the front of the model, where it is shown in light and reddish shades. Here you can see the tissue's characteristic spongy network of trabeculae, where the communicating cavities are filled with bone marrow. The thin membrane (endosteum) which lines the medullary cavity and cavities is also seen

Clinical features
Clinical features
Clinically speaking, the model can be used to understand diseases in bone tissue. An example is bone fragility (osteoporosis), where the changes of the disease are most pronounced in the spongy bone tissue. Cancellous bone tissue occurs i.a. at the ends of the long tubular bones that this model illustrates.
Other examples are osteomalacia, ostitis deformans (Paget's bone disease), hyperparathyroidism and multiple myeloma.
