This ear model is highly enlarged, detachable and shows all the major structures of the ear, several of which are seen in three-dimensional detail.

The ear model weighs approx. 1 kg, and the dimensions are 33 x 23 x 22.5 cm.

It shows the ear in 3 times normal size, can be separated into 4 parts and is delivered on a stand (white plastic sheet).

The most important anatomical structures on the model are numbered, and a brief overview with their names in English has been prepared, which is included.

Anatomical features

Anatomically, the model shows the entire ear, which consists of the outer ear (including the ear canal), the middle ear and the inner ear. In addition, a bit of the auditory tube (the Eustachian tube) is shown, which communicates with the nasopharynx (upper part of the throat) and the location of the ear in the temporal bone (os temoporale).

The model can be separated into 4 parts as follows:

The eardrum and the 3 bones in the middle ear can be removed in one piece
The labyrinth (with, among other things, the cochlea and the auditory and balance nerve) can be removed and divided into 2

Several of the anatomical structures are seen in 3 dimensions. Many anatomical structures are seen, such as:

The eardrum (membrana tympani) with small details
The 3 bones of the middle ear (the hammer/malleus, the anvil/incus and the stirrup/stapes) with small details
The oval window
The inner ear (cochlea and the balance organ with, among other things, the arches) with small details
Hearing and equilibrium nerve (nervus vestibulocochlearis)
Internal carotid artery and some muscles

Clinical features

Clinically speaking, the model can be used to understand ear diseases such as otitis media, cholesteatoma (bone eater), perforated eardrum and bullous myringitis.

Furthermore, the ear model can be used to understand examination methods and treatments such as the installation of a drain (tympanic membrane drain).
